Swedish book title translations

suecanaI alluded to the problem of searching for suecana (in Swedish) in my last post. Another problem is that titles don’t always get translated word for word. For example, Män som hatar kvinnor should be translated to Men who hate women, and it is in French, Les hommes qui n’aimaient pas les femmes, and in Spanish, Los hombres que no amaban a las mujeres. However, in English it is known as The girl with the dragon tattoo. This makes the process a whole lot harder! His second book in the trilogy was translated word for word, The girl who played with fire while Luftslottet som sprängdes was translated into The girl who kicked the hornets’ nest.

Other examples of title deviations:

Author Original titel Literal translation Actual translation
Bredow, Katarina von Räcker det om jag älskar dig? Is it enough that I love you? Zum Glück allein (German)
Bredow, Katarina von Hur kär får man bli? How much in love can you be? Onmogelijk verliefd (Dutch)
Edwardson, Åke Himlen är en plats på jorden Heaven is a place on Earth Frozen tracks
Ekman, Kerstin De tre små mästarna Three small masters Under the snow
Lindgren, Astrid Pippi Långstrump Pippi Longstocking Fifi Brandacier (French)
Läckberg, Camilla Snöstorm och mandeldoft Snowstorm and smell of almonds Cyanure (French)

As you can see, it’s not always so easy! We’d appreciate any tips of suecana not in our collection.

  1. Lars Aronsson skriver:

This is a wellknown problems when it comes to Swedish non-literal translations of Hollywood movies, e.g.
The Producers = Det våras för Hitler,
Spaceballs = Det våras för rymden,
High anxiety = Det våras för galningarna,
Blazing saddles = Det våras för sheriffen,
History of the World = Det våras för världshistorien, etc.

What it comes down to is finding a title that will sell the product. See also http://www.aftonbladet.se/nojesbladet/kronikorer/janolovandersson/article11559100.ab

Thanks for your comment, Lars. I wasn’t aware of the article in Aftonbladet.
How about a title change that irritates me to no end? Sandra Bullock’s Miss Congeniality has been changed to Miss Secret Agent for Swedish audiences
